Bob Slie bio picture

Welcome to my Blog!

Thanks for stopping by today.  My name is Bob Slie and I'm the blessed husband of the world's best wife, Kim, and two wonderful daughters Addison and Jenna.  We live in Huntsville, Texas where I've been the Youth Pastor of Northside Baptist Church for ten years.  We love the small town life, and are proud to call Texas home.  This blog is a place for me to share photographs that I've taken and pass along thoughts and stories for my friends and family to enjoy.  Feel free to leave a comment on any post and I'll enjoy reading your thoughts.  Have a wonderful day and enjoy!

Addie’s Birthday Song

I am so proud of Addison! Yesterday she turned 9 years old, and this is the song she sang in church:

Painted Sky

The clouds tonight over Huntsville were facinating.  We were on the way home from Conroe when we saw them formed in the Western sky.  I knew there was only about 30 minutes till the sun would be down, and we were about 20 minutes from home… without my camera.  So, I drove the speed limit home :) , grabbed the camera and headed a few miles west of our house to a good clearing.  We got there just in time to grab about 50 frames before the clouds faded.  I played around with a .9 ev split grad filter to get the sky exposed correctly without losing the foreground to total darkness.  Pretty cool!  God, you did a great job painting the sky tonight.  I enjoyed it!

2008 Favorite Photos – Colorado – Group 3 of 3

We had so much fun with our friends, The Tighe Family, in Colorado this past July.  Peter and I were roommates for one semester at Texas A&M and have been brothers in the Lord ever since.  We don’t see each other often, but when we do, we pick back up right where we left off… like we’d never been apart.  Peter has a wonderful wife, Jan, and three great kids.  Pictured here are Jonatha and Aiden.  Our girls love to play with them.  They now have a new baby.  Congratulations Peter and Jan.  This was a beautiful sunset over Boulder in the background.  This overlook is just blocks from their house in Broomfield.  I’m jealous!

Here’s my favorite pictures of the girls from our trip to Colorado last summer.  We took a lot of them and got some really good ones I didn’t post.  I had to pick my favorites.

I nearly told Jenna to stand up for the picture, but you know… this really is her personality.  So I closed my mouth and took a few frames.  I’m so glad I did.

That’s it for the Colorado pictures.  I took over 900, and these are the best 28 in these three posts.  There were a lot of good ones I didn’t post, but you’ll have to flip through my photo album to see the rest.

2008 Favorite Photos – Colorado – Group 2 of 3

Here are my favorites from the Vegitation and Wildlife categories from our trip to Colorado last July.  I think we got some really great shots of some streams and especially the wildlife.  My wife, Kim, took a couple of these pictures including my favorite picture of 2008 (besides pictures of my girls of course).  So here they are:

The above shot was fun because I was learning a new technique.  Using a Neutral Density filter on my camera lens, it acts like sunglasses for the camera.  This filter limits the light entering the lens and allows me to slow down the shutter speed in broad daylight in order to blur the water while keeping the surroundings in proper exposure.  Lots of fun!

This shot of the fox is my favorite photo from 2008, and I’m proud to say that my wife, Kim, took the picture.  We were traveling on Boreas Pass Rd. just after an afternoon shower.  We passed this fox just walking down the road and I took a couple of quick shots of him.  I was pretty excited, and they were alright.  As we made our way back down the road after reaching the summit, the fox had found a place on the side of the road to rest and dry out. Kim took several frames of him, but this one where he’s just peeking at you was the best in my opinion.  Great shot Kim!

I love the light on this small evergreen.  It’s got a long life ahead of it in the Park.

Young Bull Moose on Trail Ridge Road

This shot of a young Bull Moose was lot’s of fun to capture.  We were driving through the valley on the South end of Rocky Mountain National Park and saw a few cars parked on the side of the road.  Down the hill from the road was this Moose.  Kim decided to take the trek down the slope with the tripod slung over her shoulder.  She got down on ground level with this guy and took about 20 frames.  This was the best on of the bunch as most of them he was looking away or the branches were blocking his face.  Great shot Kim!

I have to admit that a Moose is a pretty great find for the day in Rocky Mountain National Park, but near the summit, you can usually find the Elk if the weather is nice.  We looked everywhere and had almost given up when we came across about eight male Elk down the slope a short hike from the road.  I parked the car and Kim and the girls stayed while I trekked down.  I got about 30 decent frames, but I couldn’t get real close.  I had my lens racked out to 300 mm and was pleased to have finally seen Elk.  I took a hike back up to the car stopping a few times for some air (we were around 12,000 feet) and looked through the shots I got.  I was pretty happy, but I didn’t really get “the shot”.  We drove another 1/4 mile and low and behold this guy and his friend were just sunbathing about 200 feet from the road.  I love this frame.  The mountainside in the background is probably a mile away across a huge valley.  Just beautiful!

2008 Favorite Photos – Colorado – Group 1 of 3

My family took a vacation to Colorado in July for a family reunion.  We had a great time and I took over 900 photos.  We spent the first few days with some friends, Peter and Jan Tighe and their kids.  Our kids always have a great time together!  My girls cry everytime we leave Aiden and Jonatha.  Congratulations to the Tighe’s, they have a new baby since we were there.  We can’t wait to see the new addition in real life sometime soon.  We then spent a few days with my parents in Breckenridge just relaxing.  Dad and I went fly fishing one day and the girls went shopping.  We caught a few fish, but I almost wish I would have just taken the time to photograph my dad while he fished.  We had a great time, but I have no pictures to show for it.  The last part of the week we stayed with my aunt and uncle in Greeley and attended the Slie-Tagler family reunion. It was great to see everyone from my dad’s side of the family.  Thanks Aunt Jo and Uncle Randy for the wonderful hospitality at your home.

Here’s the first of 3 sets of photos from the trip.  I’ve narrowed it down to my favorite 28.  These first ten are pictures of landscapes and vistas.

This last picture is my favorite view in Colorado to date. I’m afraid no picture will ever do it justice. The hills are covered in this bright green tundra and the valley drops several thousand feet to the creek below. I’ve never been to the mountains in Ireland, but I imagine this is what it looks like there.

Stay tuned for part 2 – Wildlife and Vegetation.

The New Blog

I’m very excited about the creation of this new site and blog.  I have taken over 12,000 pictures in the past year, and have not shared very many of them with anyone.  Of course, they’re not all good, but I have been fortunate enough to get some really good shots too.  To get started, I think I’ll add a few posts with my favorites from 2008.  We’re not too far into 2009 yet, so I can get away with it, I think.  My plan is to begin posting pictures as I take them too.  Be sure to subscribe to this blog in your favorite rss reader or Outlook so you know when new posts are up.  I’ll also be adding a “subscribe by email” at the bottom as soon as I get a feedburner feed setup.  This will allow you to enter you email once, and then you’ll get an email every time I make a post.  This will be good for those of you who don’t use an rss reader.  Well, I’ve got to get working on some post-production work on my favorites from 2008 so I can begin posting.  Thanks for stopping by!
